UCC Testbed Hackathon 2026 for Students and Young Technologists [Deadline: October 16]

Applications are open for the UCC Testbed Hackathon 2026, a two-day innovation challenge bringing together emerging technology talent to develop practical solutions for safer digital spaces for children.

Organised by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in partnership with netLabs!UG, the Research and Education Network for Uganda, Makerere University Technology and Innovation Centre, and NextGen Restyling Uganda, the hackathon will take place from November 5–6, 2026 at the UCC Testbed and Innovation Hub at UICT in Nakawa, Kampala.

The 2026 challenge will run under the theme “Innovating Safer Cyber Spaces for Children through Artificial Intelligence.”

What Participants Will Work On

A total of 40 participants will be selected and organised into teams to develop and demonstrate prototype solutions addressing online risks affecting children.

Potential areas of exploration include artificial intelligence, content filtering, parental controls, online child protection, reporting mechanisms, incident response and referral systems.

  • Final demonstrations and judging

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to:

  • University students
  • Recent graduates
  • Young technologists and innovators
  • People interested in emerging technologies and digital innovation

Applicants with experience or skills in artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, mobile networks, software development, embedded systems, Internet of Things and related technology fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

Female applicants are especially encouraged to participate.
