Climate Intervention Environmental Impact Fund 2026: Three US$75,000 Grants Available [Deadline: December 1]

Closing on: Dec 1, 2026

The Climate Intervention Environmental Impact Fund (CIEIF) is accepting applications for its sixth grant round, offering three grants of US$75,000 each to support environmental impact assessments, predictive modelling and stakeholder engagement for innovative climate intervention technologies approaching small-scale field testing.

The funding is available internationally, including to eligible organisations and research institutions in Africa.

About the Fund

CIEIF supports investigators developing climate intervention technologies with the potential to address the causes or major effects of global warming.

Rather than financing technology development or field-test implementation, the fund supports independent assessments of potential environmental, social, economic and public health impacts before proposed interventions proceed.

The objective is to help researchers and organisations better understand the risks and implications of testing emerging climate intervention technologies.

Eligible Areas of Support

The fund supports three principal activities:

  • Environmental Impact Assessments: Evaluating the potential environmental and related impacts of proposed climate intervention field tests.
  • Predictive Impact Modelling: Assessing likely outcomes, risks and unintended consequences before field testing.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Consulting potentially affected communities, government agencies and other stakeholders.

Eligible interventions may include biochar, enhanced rock weathering, methane removal, marine carbon dioxide removal, ocean-based interventions and other innovative approaches with the potential for significant climate benefits.

Projects focused solely on climate adaptation, clean energy, conventional emissions reduction or general sustainability are not eligible. CIEIF also excludes direct air capture, carbon capture utilisation and storage, and stratospheric solar radiation management.

Funding and Benefits

CIEIF will award three grants of US$75,000 each.

Funding may cover independent consulting services, environmental assessments, modelling, stakeholder consultations, researcher time directly associated with the eligible work and related expenses.

The initial third of each grant will be disbursed after project-scoping discussions, with subsequent payments tied to agreed milestones.

Selected grantees may also receive technical advice from CIEIF personnel. Further annual funding may be possible, subject to the fund’s requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applications are open to qualified organisations and project teams worldwide developing innovative climate intervention technologies approaching field testing.
  • Priority is given to nonprofit institutions, although private businesses may also apply.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the scientific basis and potential scalability of their proposed intervention, identify relevant permits and approvals, and present a credible plan for assessing its impacts.
  • Government agencies, individuals and students are not eligible for direct funding.
  • Grantees must also be willing to publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals or independently reviewed reports.

Application Requirements

Applicants must prepare an English-language proposal of no more than 20 single-spaced pages, excluding permitted supporting documents.

Proposals should include the planned field test, supporting research, potential impacts, relevant permits, proposed independent consultants, other funding sources and a budget explaining how the US$75,000 would be used.

There is no standard application form. Applicants must contact CIEIF Fund Manager Peter T. Jenkins at info@CIEIF.org before submitting their completed proposal to arrange delivery.

Important: CIEIF explicitly prohibits the use of AI to write application materials and states that applications identified as AI-generated will be rejected.
