AI for Impact Challenge (AI4I) 2026: Zimbabwe Opens Call for Practical AI Solutions with Public Impact [Deadline: July 14]

Closing on: Jul 14, 2026

Zimbabwean innovators, startups, researchers, universities, learning institutions, and multidisciplinary teams are invited to submit proposals for the AI for Impact Challenge (AI4I) 2026, a national innovation programme led by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). The initiative seeks practical artificial intelligence solutions that respond to real public and industry needs while strengthening local capability and advancing implementation of Zimbabwe’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

Positioned as the operational pathway for the AI Grand Challenge announced under the National AI Strategy launched in March 2026, AI4I is intended to move beyond policy ambitions and support the development of deployable solutions with measurable value.

About the Programme

The challenge is designed for teams developing AI applications with clear use cases, identifiable beneficiaries, and realistic pathways to adoption. Rather than rewarding speculative concepts, AI4I prioritises proposals that demonstrate substance, technical credibility, and practical implementation potential.

Participants selected into the programme will progress through a structured support process culminating in a six-day residential bootcamp in Mutare from July 27 to August 1, 2026. During this period, teams will refine concepts, validate assumptions, strengthen solution design, and present their work with guidance from technical experts, coaches, and ecosystem partners.

Priority Areas

POTRAZ is encouraging proposals that contribute to national development priorities, including:

  • Public service delivery
  • Agriculture and food systems
  • Tourism
  • Future skills and education

  • Climate resilience
  • Local language technologies
  • Digital accessibility
  • Responsible AI governance

Who Can Apply

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Apply as teams consisting of two to five members
  • Be Zimbabwean citizens or residents
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Address a demonstrated public, industry, or regulatory challenge
  • Present solutions with a credible route to piloting, adoption, or scale

What Participants Receive

  • Expert coaching and technical guidance
  • Solution refinement and validation support
  • Participation in the residential AI4I challenge and bootcamp
