Asharami M.A.D Equation 2026 — Up to $25,000 for Applied Energy Research Solving Africa’s Real Operational Challenges [Deadline: June 20]

Closing on: Jun 20, 2026

Researchers and innovators across Africa working on applied solutions to real energy sector challenges are invited to apply for the Asharami M.A.D Equation — a competitive applied research award launched by Sahara Group to mark its 30th anniversary. The initiative invites innovators from Nigeria and other African emerging economies to submit research that addresses specific operational challenges within Sahara’s exploration, production, and power businesses.

This is not a scholarship or an open research grant. It is a structured competition for existing or advanced-stage applied research — evaluated on originality, implementation potential, and real-world impact.

About the Initiative

Across Africa, significant research is being produced, yet too few ideas move beyond journals and into practical application. The Asharami M.A.D Equation — where M.A.D stands for Making A Difference — exists to close that gap. By connecting academic insight with industry challenges, the initiative supports research that is practical, scalable, and aligned with global energy transition goals.

Selected innovations gain access not only to cash awards but to mentorship, technical support, and pathways toward real integration into Sahara’s operations.

Research Themes

Oil and Gas Sector:

  • Upstream flowstation digitalisation and real-time production monitoring
  • Predictive maintenance and condition monitoring for upstream rotating equipment
  • Heavy oil flow assurance and field development strategy
  • Ageing thermal asset reliability, predictive maintenance, and process optimisation

Power Sector:

  • Reliable power generation amid gas, grid, and market constraints
  • Improving network stability and resilience in distribution systems

Who Can Apply:

  • Innovators from within the African continent
  • Researchers whose work aligns with the defined research themes
  • Those whose innovations are implementable within Sahara’s E&P or power businesses
  • Applicants from postgraduate applied research — MSc and PhD level — and beyond

Awards:

  • First Prize: $25,000
  • Second Prize: $15,000
  • Third Prize: $10,000

Beyond the cash awards, selected innovators receive mentorship, technical support, and pathways to real-world implementation within Sahara’s operations.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application form
  • Concept note — maximum 20 pages in PDF format covering research idea, objectives, expected outcomes, and relevance to the themes
  • Applicant CV in PDF format
  • Institutional endorsement letter signed by Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, or Director of Research and Innovation
