The Threads of Africa 2026 Fashion Film Prize is a pan-African competition inviting fashion designers, filmmakers, students, and creative teams to document and revive Africa’s endangered textile heritage through film. The prize offers a $25,000 non-dilutive grant to the winning entry — meaning the money belongs entirely to the winner, with no equity taken in return.
The premise is straightforward but powerful. Africa’s textiles carry centuries of knowledge in their weave, dye, and stitch — and many of them are close to being lost. Threads of Africa 2026 invites creatives across the continent and diaspora to choose one endangered, forgotten, or underused African textile, garment, or technique, and build a three-to-five-minute fashion film around it. The film must show where the textile comes from, how it is made, and why it deserves a future.
What Your Film Must Cover:
- Documentary-style interviews with the people who hold the knowledge — weavers, elders, historians, or artisans
- The design and making journey, from the textile itself through to the finished look
- A clear argument for why the fabric or technique should live on, including its cultural meaning and commercial potential
How Films Are Judged:
Films are scored against four weighted criteria:
- Cultural authenticity and research depth — 30%
- Creative innovation and design excellence — 30%
- Narrative power and emotional impact — 25%
- Commercial and revival viability — 15%
Who Can Enter:
- Fashion designers, filmmakers, students, and creative teams of African descent from across Africa and the diaspora
- Individuals and teams are both welcome
- Entrants must be ready to credit collaborators and the knowledge holders behind the work
What the Winner Receives:
- $25,000 non-dilutive grant — no equity, no strings
- At least three guaranteed mentorship sessions with judges and industry leaders
